First President, First Freedom: Religious Freedom and Washington’s Election

A Conference Sponsored by the Loeb Institute for Religious Freedom and the Museum of the Bible on "First President, First Freedom: Religious Freedom and Washington’s Election".

Confronting rising threats of violent intolerance, including the recent massacre at Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh, the panel will discuss George Washington’s legacy of religious freedom. We will take our point of departure from the letters president-elect Washington sent to minority religious communities including Baptists, Jews, Methodists and, Quakers—and consider what Washington’s example has to teach us today.

Panelists include Professor Jonathan Sarna (Brandeis University), Professor Daniel L. Dreisbach (American University), Asma T. Uddin (Freedom Forum Institute). The panel will be moderated by Professor Samuel Goldman, executive director of the Loeb Institute for Religious Freedom.
